| "Master Korlael, the Catachan unit that witnessed the ravings of the Fallen we ran to ground this morning are deployed on the other side of this subterranean manufactorum's cooling vents. Squads Zanthor and Scalprum are moving into position to ensure that whatever the guard may have heard will not leave this world." The long awaited meeting between my Dark Angels and the picture perfect Catachans of the Wachtmeister's 40K2ndAC army finally occurred and it was great fun. It was my first game with the 2nd edition ruleset since I was a teen. The combination of nostalgia for the old days and the satisfaction of fielding the colorful 2nd edition army I've been working on for the last year was an awesome feeling. Unfortunately that feeling didn't translate into onboard success since the Catachans defeated my Dark Angels 12VP to 5 VP. However since I play more for the love of the game rather than competitiveness, getting our asses handed to us by a bunch of baseline humans was only a small speed bump in the road to pure happiness that this classic game generated. The Wachtmeister took notes during the game so I will leave the detailed battle report to him. Follow along after the jump for some awesome pictures of the action and a version of the events that fits with the perceptions of my members of the 1st Legion... |
Along with an awesome picture of Rogue Trader era Zoats, This week's banner entry has some really cool early Eldar raider banners. As Always it is interesting to how many elements of these designs made it into the eventual craftworlds and kabals that define the Aeldari we know today. Those early Space Elf miniatures were coveted by my younger self but I could never find them on the pegs at my FLGS. Please feel free to copy and print image above for any Eldar banner needs you may have.
Following on the heels of the early Eldar paint schemes from a few days ago, here's another page from the very first Chapter Approved featuring some beautiful old Squat models, Imperial Army Banners for Squat Units, and early Eldar Banners that look like they would fit right in with the pirate raiders from the Eldar Legion box set.

Wow, It is hard to believe the six months of the 2nd edition army challenge are over. Participating in the challenge has been the best experience I've had so far since I started this blog to be part of the wider hobby community. There was a great feeling of camaraderie among the participants, probably partially thanks to the niche interest that is loving 2nd edition minis and the infamous "red period" of the GW studio's painting and marketing departments. Much encouragement and joking went on via a group chat thread that continued from before the challenge started right up to the end. It was a great way to refine ideas for the challenge through discussion and find inspiration to stick with one project over six months. Thanks to this challenge I attempted many new techniques I hadn't tried before and really enjoyed being able to experiment with things like wet blending and freehand designs. Plus I was able to paint miniatures I've owned for many years while also using the painting of those models to add two more squads along with two characters to my ongoing project to paint all of the 4th company of the Dark Angels. I will milk the end of the challenge for a few more days, the warm fuzzies of accomplishment deserve a few more posts after half a year of work. Be sure to check out the final post for the challenge, all the participants did an amazing job:

Those who are not celebrating Dreadtober or it's radio cousin Rocktober, may have their sites set on feting all things green this month whilst painting models for Orktober. These original RT Orks always have had a special place in my heart from staring at so many pictures of them in 'Eavy Metal back in my early White Dwarf reading days. I'm also enjoying seeing how many of the concepts in these early banners were repurposed for other factions later on. In this week's feature above, I'm pretty sure that Ork Raider Vampire banner was repurposed for the World Eaters insignia. Thanks for stopping by, hopefully next year I'll really coordinate my actions and paint an old school Ork Dreadnought for Dreadtober.
This week's entry is a vintage Dark Angels gem from their first official supplement codex that I scanned recently for a fellow participant in the 2nd Ed Army Challenge. If you haven't checked out the first month's post, follow the link and check out some amazing looking classic GW miniatures. Based on my success with printing the banner for my Inquisitor, in the near future I may try and use those the character banners above for my Deathwing Chaplain and Librarian. There seems to be no end to Dark Angels players out there so hopefully this is useful for someone who may want to have a go at old school back banners.

| I've got to find a way to include that crazy ass early Ravenwing banner in my Dark Angels army somewhere... |
My recent foray into the Inquisitional Conclave led to me discovering I had an untapped resource on my bookshelf that may be helpful for the hobby community at large. For many years I have owned an incomplete copy of the Rogue Trader Chapter Approved which was fun for the lore contained in the pages that were complete, but I had always seen it as a disappointment overall because all of the nascent Imperial army lists that should have been in there were missing due to GW's infamous problems with bindings falling apart on their early sourcebooks. While scanning in some pages as part of my ongoing Codex Titanicus entries I decided to take another flip through that book to see if there was anything worth scanning since thanks to the aforementioned binding issues there were many loose pages ripe for scanning within. Much to my delight I found that not only was the full color catalogue at the back complete, the bottom of every page contained at least five or six banners for the factions that existed in the early Rogue Trader era. I was especially excited to find an Inquisitors banner that was perfect for my conclave entry but the wealth of banners went on for pages and I know from my own internet searches that sometimes finding reliable quality scans of these old resources can be difficult.
