Cover Gallery - White Dwarf #126 Back Cover

Many earlier posts have spoken of my love of the old Space Hulk range of WH40K miniatures.  This week's back cover is a fantastic example of how the 'Eavy Metal team beautifully rendered these classic minis that still look amazing thirty years later.

Cover Gallery - White Dwarf #122 Back Cover

Waaaagggghhhh, Da Orks!!!!

There is certainly some bias involved since this was my first issue, but this is my favorite of the back cover dioramas in WD.  I spent so many hours in the pre-internet days of my teens staring at this picture and dreaming of how I would paint the models or use them in a game.  I loved reading 'Ere We Go and built so many aspirational ork armies on paper that never saw a game.  The original plastic boyz, battlewagon, and warbike are still sitting in their boxes twenty-five years later just waiting to recreate this classic scene.  2023 hobby goals perhaps????

Cover Gallery - White Dwarf #118 Back Cover

The 41st Millennium And The Old World

Another month in 1990 and another excellent back cover diorama from the 'Eavy Metal crew.  On the top we have an awesome image mixing 40K and Epic size miniatures to create a picture of a recon force observing the movement of a massive body of Chaos forces.  The lower picture depicts Skaven breaching the walls of a High Elf fortress, it's cool to see the old High Elf Miniatures make an appearance here before the WFB 4th edition box set would make the appearance of High Elves far more uniform.  Stay safe and tune in again next Friday for another classic cover.

White Dwarf #117 Back Cover
This amazing diorama was definitely one of the hooks that drew me into a love of the WH40K universe.  The use of 28mm figures on the top and 6mm figures one the bottom gave the impression you were seeing a blow-up of the same scene (even though no Space Wolves are in the lower photo).  Throw in that one of the figures in the upper illustration is the first primarch to be made as a mini, Leman Russ, and this diorama scores 5 out of 5 on the coolness scale.  Feel free to stare into the wonder for as long as you need to, my 13 year old self is still gazing and imaging all the things I could do if I owned all these models ;-)

Imperial Knights

My Warlord Titans Need Some Sidekicks

I would love to pick up some of these models to field in my games of Epic but they are currently way to pricey on Ebay...

Imperator Titan!

I always wanted one of these giant Titans, I loved the idea that whole companies of tech guard infantry were ready to deploy from the legs of the Imperator Titan.

Genestealer Attack!

Roots Of Madness

I spent so much time staring at this picture when I was twelve.  I had never seen such a detailed multi-level diorama that told a story with so much drama and action in stationary models.

To show how much my fascination with the lore of WH40K as illustrated in the many works of the GW studio and 'Eavy Metal permeated my mind almost constantly as a teen, I found this sketch the other day that I drew when I was 12.  This would have been around the winter spring of 91-92 as I was really immersing myself in any GW material I could get my hands on and definitely the result of hours spent staring at the above diorama which was featured on the back of a How To Paint Citadel Miniatures guide that sadly is no longer in my collection.   Is it the random luck of the dicing universe this sketch came back to the forefront of my attention in relative proximity to the time when I found a mediocre picture of that classic diorama on Facebook?  Like the Tootsie Roll pop, the world may never know...
