Walk Up And Down Outside The Wall

For some reason I have an obsession with painting bricks the brickety-brickest red I can achieve.  Is this because I grew up in a series of three different brick houses?  If I had grown up in the Southwest would all my scenery be adobe structures like the old 2nd edition Ork huts?

Army Painter Wasteland tufts seem to be a good turf color for "space junkyard".

This gorgeous resin barricade is available from Spellcrow miniatures an awesome producer of miniatures and scenery in resin from Poland.  They have all kinds of great conversion bits for 40K miniatures and their own line of fantasy skirmish minis and a game system to go with it.  If you have ever wanted to make a super detailed Salamanders or Space Wolves army this site has all the scaled armor and wolf pelt pauldrons you could possibly want.  There are conversion bits for several different chapters, as well as some cool ork conversion bits as well.  Also available on their website are some great pieces of scatter terrain sized scenery and if you order over $80 worth of stuff international shipping is free.

Imperial Army Checkpoint TK 421

Not a mighty fortress just yet, but certainly enough for a security perimeter around a supply depot...

This Imperial Guard checkpoint is a perfect example of the way your hobby can spiral out of control in a constructive way sometimes if you follow your imagination.  All these items came in a sampler pack of terrain from Ender Toys Terrain which I have mentioned on this blog before.  When I first looked at buying some Ender Toys Terrain on Amazon, I was a little cautious because of how low their prices were so I bought a variety pack that contained a wide range of their terrain items so I could gauge the quality of their offerings. These pieces were primed white for a year after buying the set, but as I started taking in game pictures for this blog the bright whiteness of the bunker in particular was driving me crazy.  On a mostly basecoated board with a lot of the other terrain in various stages of painting, the primer white bunker stood out like a sore thumb.  Follow along after the jump if you want to know more about the rabbit hole I fell down thanks to these scenery items...

The #DadGoals Menace

My son and I got in another game of Kill Team to close out winter break and he beat me again!  We finally played a scenario out of the Kill Team rulebook and the game seemed to be going in my favor for the first four turns.  However with his usual uncanny dice rolling he took four of my marines out of action in the fifth turn and pulled ahead in victory points.  More on my defeat after the jump, along with some pictures to document the occasion...

The plain white primer bunker and barricade in the left foreground drove me so crazy in these pictures I spent most of January painting them...

With A Vengeance

My son and I got in another game of Kill Team right before the holidays.  We played his hostage rescue scenario again and while I did better this time, he took four of my marines out of action in the last turn and snatched victory away from me as is his usual style.  I’m concerned he’s going to become a degenerate gambler someday because he thinks he can never lose.  This time my son went through BattleScribe with me and picked his own Kill Team.  He loved having control over what troops he took and what they were armed with, and he had a great suggestion about what specialist should take which weapons that I liked so much I incorporated it into my list as well.  Please check “positive contributions to an army list” off the chart of Warhammer parenting milestones.  Unfortunately we played on the darker side of the 8’ x 4’ gaming table so I only got one decent picture of the action.

Last Saturday the day I've been waiting for basically since my son was born finally arrived.  We played our first game of Warhammer 40,000.  Technically we played Kill Team, but it was his first miniatures games on a real table with scenery.  Starting a few years ago we played Heroclix as super-heroes were the easiest hook into gaming.  Last year Betrayal at Calth came in handy as more than just the source of 30K miniatures, it was the first in-universe GW game we played together with miniatures.
